Home / Anime List / Best Horror Anime Movies to Watch this Coming Halloween

Halloween is fast approaching my Otaku friends.  Have you thought of amazing plans on how to celebrate with family and friends?  Are you going on a trip?  Or do you prefer relaxing at home and giving out candies to horrifyingly cute trick-or-treaters?  If you ask me, I rather stay at home than be exposed to all the stresses that come with traveling.  Don’t get me wrong, I love exploring new places and meeting new friends but Halloween for me is not just a holiday but a chance to relax and step outside all the everyday life hustle and bustles.  And what better way to spend the Halloween night than watching horror movies, right?  For Otakus like us, it’s ten times better if they are horror anime movies.

There are hundreds of titles to choose from ranging from old school anime horror to new ones complete with 3D effects and new art styles which greatly improves the viewing experience.  I know it’s hard to decide with all these options so I’ll save you time by creating this list.  All of the anime movies mentioned below are worth your time.  It all comes down to personal preference and your level of tolerance when it comes to gore and scare.  Go on, read through the list and I’m pretty sure you’ll find one or two that would peek your interest.

Blood: The Last Vampire

Release Date: 2000

My Personal Rating: 5/5

Gore and Scare Level: 5/5

Blood: The Last Vampire is a must-watch not just this coming Halloween but any time you want to experience anime artistry in its full potential.   I consider it one of my favorite anime movies.  Although it has a dark setting, the story is basically all about hope. As it follows the life of the last remaining original vampire who slays her evil brethren, we can slowly realize that she is mankind’s only hope to fend off evil.  She easily eliminates even the most powerful vampires with her katana.  Being outnumbered is also not a problem as she overcomes every challenge not just by physical prowess but through her unrivaled skills and wit.  But why is an original vampire doing so much for mankind who obviously hates her kind?  What sacrifices is she willing to give just to accomplish her mission?  There’s no other way to answer these questions than to watch this epic movie! I suggest inviting your friends to come over for this one because it guarantees a fun and exciting time.

Kakurenbo

Release Date: 2004

My Personal Rating: 4/5

Gore and Scare Level: 3/5

Probably the only bad thing about Kakurenbo is its length.  Come on, 25 minutes is too short for such a wonderful anime movie.  I was excited the moment I got a copy because the title really doesn’t tell you much.  The art style also surprised me as it is very refreshing in contrast to other anime movies made way back in 2004.  But what really influenced me to give it a very high rating, one short of perfect, is its story.  You might have several guesses as to how everything will turn out but you’ll be wrong in the end.  It’s a horror movie that is fun to watch especially if you are with scaredy-cats!

I know you want a copy so grab it here now!

Gore and Scare Level: 5/5

The animation of this movie is not very flashy but it is still very good. The story is great which makes viewers hold on to it from the start till the end. Dante’s Inferno: An Animated Epic

Release Date: 2010

My Personal Rating: 4/5

Gore and Scare Level: 5/5

How far would you go for the woman you love?  I know you’ll give me crazy answers but I’m certain none is as daring as Dante’s.  He ventured to hell just to save her woman’s spirit.  She is destined to be in heaven yet a powerful demon grasped her by the throat and captured her in front of Dante.  Our hero was left helpless at that time but he eventually found enough courage within him to knock on death’s door and rescue the love of his life.  This anime movie will take you to a horrific yet entertaining adventure.  Dante needs to survive several representations of hell along with their unique challenges in order to succeed.  Is the power brought upon by his love enough to make this happen?  Or will he yield against the powerful demon and be left trapped in hell?

Berserk: The Golden Age Arc III

Release Date: 2013

My Personal Rating: 3/5

Gore and Scare Level: 4/5

The Berserk anime show is known for its brutally entertaining fight scenes and interesting characters with unique personalities.  The Berserk: The Golden Age Arc III takes the franchise to a whole new level.  The animation is crispier and the story has never been as exhilarating.  But it’s really not a horror anime movie so why is it included in this list?  It’s simple, the entertainment value and level of excitement this anime movie offers can rival the most terrifying anime movies out there.    You’ll easily be at the edge of your seat as Guts avoid enemy attacks by a hairline as Griffith comes up with a plan to turn the tides of the battle a split second before it can be ruled late.

The Empire of Corpses

Release Date: 2015

My Personal Rating: 3/5

Gore and Scare Level: 3/5

Frankenstein is the famous scientist of European horror folklore who is responsible for reanimating the monster.   He was killed right after accomplishing his lifetime goal and the monster terrorized the living afterward.  The story has been told a couple of times so a different twist won’t be bad right?  This is probably the reasoning behind The Empire of Corpses.  This anime movie took the vital elements of Frankenstein’s story and transformed it into a new masterpiece with the help of anime’s magic and ingenious storytelling.   The art style of The Empire of Corpses is really good so I suggest it to every anime fan who appreciates visual beauty.

GYO: Tokyo Fish Attack

Release Date: 2012

My Personal Rating: 5/5

Gore and Scare Level: 4/5

A lot of monsters were born as pop culture flourished for years.  They came in all sorts of sizes from small goblins to gigantic treants.  But it’s the first time I’ve heard or read about fish monsters that fly and eat humans living in a city.  This is how unique GYO: Tokyo Fish Attack is.  At first, it may sound funny but a few minutes of watching the show is enough for you to be convinced that it’s worth your time.  The entertainment value is almost equivalent to watching famous horror movies like Dracula and Van Hellsing for the first time.  You’ll never know what will happen and how the protagonist can survive since the monsters they are up against are new to us.

Get to know more about these fish monsters that defy logic.

Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare

My Personal Rating: 4/5

Gore and Scare Level: 2/5

Detective Conan has been around for quite some time.  The story started when the promising detective Shinichi Kudo was transformed into a young boy after being caught by a dangerous crime syndicate.  This movie takes the Detective Conan franchise towards a mind-boggling and thrilling turn.  This time around, Conan will stumble upon clues pointing to the syndicate that caused his condition.  The clue is not a page of a notebook or a recording but a woman who infiltrated the NPA Security Bureau Office with a goal to get the list of undercover agents in the Black organization.  Can Conan and his friends stop the Black organization’s plans before the agents are put into grave danger?  Will Conan be able to find a permanent cure to his condition?

This movie is not that scary nor does it have a lot of gore but it’s a show for the whole family.  The upcoming Halloween Party Night with your kids will surely be more enjoyable with the help of Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare!
